MASTER CLASSES & READINGS
THE CREATIVE NONFICTION WRITER'S TOOLBOX
10:00 a.m. - Noon
The beauty of creative nonfiction is that it allows us to write about real life, using many of the same techniques that fiction writers use: character, setting, scene, vivid detail and images, description, metaphors, dialogue. In this workshop, we'll explore all of these literary devices. We'll read and analyze short essays, looking at how giants of this genre have used these tools—and then we'll try our own hand at creative nonfiction. You'll come out of the workshop with a new, finished piece of writing.
THE ART OF THE SHORT POEM
2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
In this workshop, we'll consider the short poem. Sometimes these little poems are the poems we love best: they take only a few seconds to read and yet we often feel they have changed our lives. These are the poems we remember, the poems we recite or read to friends, the poems we carry with us. So how do these tiny objects pack such a punch? And how might we learn to write our own? We'll consider some well-known and lesser-known short forms, including the haiku and the triolet. Then we'll do some writing!
